The Giant Ancestor of the Ice Age

About the Steppe Mammoth

Steppe Mammoth was one of the largest elephants ever to walk the Earth. Living between approximately 1.8 million and 200,000 years ago across Europe and northern Asia, this enormous herbivore stood up to 4.5 metres (15 feet) tall at the shoulder and could weigh over 10 tonnes.

The Steppe Mammoth is widely regarded as the direct ancestor of the famous Woolly Mammoth. As Ice Age climates became colder, populations gradually evolved into the shaggy mammoths that would later roam the frozen tundra.

Unlike its wool-covered descendants, the Steppe Mammoth inhabited open grasslands, river valleys, and temperate steppes. It used its massive, spiralling tusks to strip bark, move vegetation, and compete with rivals during the breeding season.

Its immense size made adult Steppe Mammoths nearly invulnerable to predators, although calves would have faced threats from prehistoric lions, hyenas, and packs of wolves.

The Figure

Eofauna has produced one of the most scientifically accurate prehistoric mammal figures available today.

The proportions perfectly capture the immense bulk of Mammuthus trogontherii, with towering shoulders, a muscular trunk, thick column-like legs, and spectacular forward-curving tusks that immediately command attention. Rather than exaggerating its appearance, Eofauna focuses on anatomical accuracy, making this figure feel like a reconstruction from a natural history museum.

Every wrinkle, muscle, and fold of skin has been carefully sculpted, giving the model remarkable realism from every angle. The dramatic walking pose adds movement while preserving the immense weight and presence expected from one of the largest land mammals in Earth's history.

Paint Application

The paintwork follows Eofauna's signature naturalistic style.

Rich dark brown tones blend into lighter greys and subtle earth colours across the body, emphasizing the skin's intricate texture without appearing overdone. Gentle shading highlights the muscles beneath the hide, while the enormous ivory tusks feature realistic weathering and colour variation that enhance their scale.

Fine details around the eyes, trunk, and mouth further elevate the realism, making this figure feel equally at home in a museum display or a collector's cabinet.

Collector POV

The Steppe Mammoth is a centrepiece figure. Its incredible size and unmistakable tusks instantly draw attention, while its scientific accuracy makes it one of the finest prehistoric mammal models ever produced. Unlike many dinosaur figures, it represents a fascinating chapter of more recent prehistory that helped shape the Ice Age ecosystems familiar to many people today.

Whether displayed alongside other Eofauna mammals or integrated into a broader prehistoric collection, this figure brings outstanding diversity beyond dinosaurs while maintaining the same museum-quality standards collectors expect.

For anyone building a scientifically grounded prehistoric collection, the Eofauna Steppe Mammoth is an essential addition.
