About Megaraptor

Megaraptor lived approximately 90 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period in what is now Argentina.

When Megaraptor was first discovered, paleontologists believed its enormous claw belonged on its foot, leading many to think it was a giant dromaeosaur similar to Velociraptor. Later discoveries revealed the famous claw actually belonged to its hand, completely changing scientists' understanding of the animal.

Unlike Tyrannosaurus rex, which relied on an immense bite force, Megaraptor possessed unusually long, powerful forelimbs armed with massive sickle-shaped claws that likely played a major role in capturing prey.

One fascinating detail is that Megaraptor belongs to one of the most mysterious groups of large theropods. Even today, scientists continue to debate exactly where megaraptorans fit on the dinosaur family tree, making them one of paleontology's most intriguing predators.

The Figure
