About the Straight Tusked Elephant

Straight Tusked Elephant was one of the largest land mammals in Earth's history. Living throughout Europe and western Asia between approximately 780,000 and 30,000 years ago, this Ice Age giant could stand over 4 metres (13 feet) tall at the shoulder and weigh as much as 13 tonnes, making it even larger than many mammoths.

Despite often being associated with the Ice Age, the Straight Tusked Elephant thrived during warmer interglacial periods, inhabiting forests, river valleys, and open woodlands. Its immense straight tusks, which could exceed 4 metres (13 feet) in length, were used for foraging, display, and competition between males.

Recent discoveries suggest these elephants lived alongside early humans, including both Neanderthals and Homo sapiens, making them one of the most iconic mammals of the Pleistocene.
