About Deinotherium

Deinotherium was one of the most distinctive proboscideans to ever exist. Appearing roughly 20 million years ago and surviving until the Early Pleistocene, members of the genus inhabited large areas of Africa, Europe, and Asia.

Unlike modern elephants and mammoths, Deinotherium carried its most remarkable tusks on the lower jaw. These enormous tusks curved downward and backward, giving the animal an unmistakable appearance. Their exact function remains debated, with proposed uses including stripping vegetation, manipulating branches, or digging.

Large species of Deinotherium were among the biggest terrestrial mammals of their time, with some individuals estimated to have stood around 4 metres (13 feet) at the shoulder. Despite its imposing appearance, it was a herbivore that fed primarily on leaves and other vegetation.
