About Konobelodon

Konobelodon was a prehistoric proboscidean that lived during the Miocene epoch, roughly 11 to 7 million years ago. Fossils attributed to the genus have been discovered in parts of Asia, where these remarkable elephant relatives inhabited environments very different from those occupied by modern elephants today.

What immediately sets Konobelodon apart is its unusual four-tusked anatomy. In addition to a pair of upper tusks, it possessed elongated lower tusks projecting from the jaw. These lower tusks were flattened and may have been useful for processing vegetation, stripping bark, digging, or manipulating plant material.

Despite its elephant-like appearance, Konobelodon belonged to the amebelodontids, an extinct branch of the proboscidean family tree characterized by their unusual lower jaws and tusks.

Its appearance is a reminder that the evolution of elephants was far more diverse than the mammoths, mastodons, and modern elephants most collectors are familiar with.
