Eofauna Deinotherium Figure
The Prehistoric Elephant With Downward Curving Tusks
About Deinotherium
Deinotherium was one of the most distinctive proboscideans to ever exist. Appearing roughly 20 million years ago and surviving until the Early Pleistocene, members of the genus inhabited large areas of Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Unlike modern elephants and mammoths, Deinotherium carried its most remarkable tusks on the lower jaw. These enormous tusks curved downward and backward, giving the animal an unmistakable appearance. Their exact function remains debated, with proposed uses including stripping vegetation, manipulating branches, or digging.
Large species of Deinotherium were among the biggest terrestrial mammals of their time, with some individuals estimated to have stood around 4 metres (13 feet) at the shoulder. Despite its imposing appearance, it was a herbivore that fed primarily on leaves and other vegetation.
The Figure
Eofauna brings this unusual prehistoric giant to life with a reconstruction focused on realistic anatomy and natural proportions.
The figure captures the tall, powerful body of Deinotherium, while its characteristic downward curving lower tusks immediately distinguish it from mammoths, mastodons, and true elephants. The sculpt emphasizes the animal's massive limbs, muscular trunk, and imposing skull while maintaining the naturalistic appearance Eofauna collectors have come to expect.
Fine wrinkles, folds of skin, and subtle anatomical details cover the body, creating a convincing reconstruction of one of prehistory's strangest elephant relatives.
Paint Application
The paint application follows Eofauna's characteristic naturalistic approach, using restrained tones that allow the sculpted anatomy and skin texture to remain the focus.
Subtle variations across the body provide depth to the wrinkles and musculature, while carefully painted facial details bring additional character to the reconstruction. The contrasting tusks highlight the feature that made Deinotherium so unique among prehistoric proboscideans.
Collector POV
For prehistoric mammal collectors, Deinotherium is a particularly interesting addition because there simply wasn't anything else quite like it.
Its enormous size and bizarre downward curving tusks create a completely different silhouette from the mammoths and prehistoric elephants commonly represented in collections. Displayed alongside Eofauna's other proboscideans, it also provides an excellent look at just how diverse the elephant family tree once was.
The Eofauna Deinotherium is a standout addition for collectors looking to expand their collection beyond dinosaurs and explore some of the extraordinary mammals of the Cenozoic.
